Functions of a Motherboard:

A motherboard is responsible for providing connectivity between the hardware components of a computer, like a processor (CPU), memory (RAM), and video card.

Specific motherboards are designed to work with specific types of processors and memory, so you need to be a bit cautious. However, hard drives are primarily universal and work with the majority motherboards regardless of the type or brand. The Motherboard is located inside your computer case, where most parts connect together. With tower computers, this would be on the left or right side. It’s the largest circuit board within the tower itself.

It contains all of the circuitry that makes your computer work. They are responsible for most major functions within a computer, including processing data, handling memory recall activities, controlling peripheral hardware, providing power to the entire system, transmitting information back and forth between different parts of the computer so they can work together, providing necessary instructions to the CPU (central processing unit), which is what performs calculations for everything that happens on your computer. More advanced motherboards contain their own CPUs as well as other components that allow them to even power themselves without relying on an outside source. Even more advanced motherboards can be hooked up to networks and allow multiple computers to operate as one.

Components of a Motherboard:

Motherboard is called the heart of a computer. So in order to keep the whole system together, motherboards contain various components for various purposes. We don’t want to bore you with the extra details so we are explaining a few of the important ones.

Expansion Slots: An expansion slot is a part of the computer where you can install hardware. A video card is an example of hardware you can install into the expansion slot. An upgrade to a computer may require that you add another expansion card to your computers, such as a graphics or sound card.

There are multiple different types of expansion slots based on what type of device will be used with it. For example., network cards require one type of slot while video cards need a different kind of expansion slot. The most common types include PCI-E, AGP, and PCI.

Heatsink: A heat sink is something that helps to cool down computers. There are two types of heat sinks: active and passive. Active heatsinks work by using the computer’s power supply and may include a fan. Passive heatsinks do not have any mechanical parts to them, so they will always work. Passive heatsinks are made up of an aluminum finned radiator which dissipates the heat through convection (the moving of air across it). For passive heatsinks to work at their full capacity, there should be a steady airflow across the fins. Heat spreaders are another type to help dissipate the heat produced by RAM modules (these help with computer memory).

CPU Sockets: The CPU Socket in a motherboard is like a power plug. The socket connects to the computer processor. For example, if you have an AMD processor, you will need to get the correct socket type that fits into your motherboard.

An important thing to remember is that each time a new generation of CPUs comes out, they are usually compatible with older sockets. However, it is hard to pin down what processors are compatible with what sockets because some sockets may be able to support multiple types of processors while others may only be able to support one type of processor. For example, Socket M2+ can only accept Intel’s new Skylake-S processors while Socket 1150 can accept all LGA1155 and earlier chips, but not the new LGA1151 ones. It is recommended to ensure CPU socket compatibility before buying a mobo.

SIO: Super input/output is a chip on the motherboard that helps to do some of the things that are not as important. It was first found on an expansion card, but now it is part of the motherboard. You can still find it if you need something to help with your computer’s input and output. There are a lot of different devices that can be plugged into the super input/output and it is still used in computers today. The primary purpose of this chip is to handle slower and less important devices like:

  • Sound cards
  • Parallel Ports (LPT)
  • USB-to-serial converters
  • RJ45 serial adapters
  • Clock generators

RAM Slots:  A memory slot is a space for computer memory. Memory slots determine the type of RAM that you buy. For example, if your motherboard has 4 open slots, then you can buy 4 pieces of SDRAM or DDR. Memory slots are necessary for a computer to function.

In this context, RAM is called memory because it can be written to or read from at different times. In data storage terms, there are two types of devices: storage devices and memory devices. Storage devices can only be read from, while memory devices may be either read from or written to. For example, hard disk drives and CD-ROMs are solid-state storage devices while magnetic tape and paper tapes are not. The information on a cassette tape can only be read, but the information on a magnetic tape can both be read and written to.

Conclusion

With so many Motherboards to choose from, it can be difficult to figure out which one is best for you. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of the 10 best motherboards for Ryzen 9 5900X processors with all the details you need to make an informed decision. Whether you want something simple or high-performing, there’s definitely a motherboard on this list that will suit your needs. So what are you waiting for? FAQs

The AMD B550 chipset delivers power speed and durability at a relatively low cost, making it an ideal motherboard for the power user looking to do more with high-end system components like Ryzen 9 5900X processor. The combination of support for up to 64GB DDR4 dual-channel memory, 20+4Gbps M.2 slots, 3Gbps SATA ports makes the B550 a great baseboard platform supporting any configuration example you can imagine.

ATX is the most common form factor. ATX boards measure 12″ x 9.6″. mATX boards are smaller, at 11″ x 10.2″. They’re less expensive and use less power because they have fewer slots for add-in cards, but they don’t fit inside many gaming cases or Advanced Technology eXtended power supplies (which are more expensive). mITx boards are even smaller by comparison, at 6.7″ x 6.7″. They include only one expansion slot, specifically for an Intel Management Engine connector to go along with the processor socket, but this is what makes them so small and ideal as compact workstations with a single video card installed or as slimline desktop systems that can fit behind a monitor.

Suppose you already own an ATX case and nothing else but want to make the jump to mATX or even mITX for your next build. You can do that by buying an inexpensive motherboard with all of the same features as your current one, then re-using your existing case.

Updating the BIOS on your computer is essential yet not easy. You will need to know if there is an update for your computer’s motherboard. Your motherboard has a version, and it needs to be updated when new updates are available. To find out if there are any new updates, you will need to go on something like “support” on a company website or your motherboard’s website (if you have a prebuilt system). When you find the support page, look for the section called “BIOS Download.” You might have a choice to use a search box, scroll through a list of computers or motherboards, or download an application that will automatically find the right BIOS version for your computer.

Once you’ve identified your motherboard correctly, look for something like “Drivers” or “Downloads.” The BIOS updates page should offer more than one version available in different formats depending on how you choose to update the BIOS. Each version might be available in different formats when updating the BIOS from Windows, DOS, or directly from the BIOS itself. If there are multiple versions available, then it must be installed according to one of these three ways.
